INTRODUCTION
Hanfic.
Hanfic = fan fiction, but with Hanson.
Hanfic.
I haven't read many fan fictions in my time. Actually, I don't believe I've ever read any. Well, except for the one I'm keeping up with now.
"So if you've never read it, then why write it?"
Well, the honest truth is, fan fiction is just so damn easy! Your main characters are already there for you, ready and waiting with their own back stories and personalities. All you have to do is create the situations!
I have only written Hanson fan fiction. Or Hanfic, if you will. I tried once with Grey's Anatomy, using Alex Karev's character but I didn't get far. I got bored with it. Not that Alex Karev isn't a great, complex, dramatic character to work with or anything. Hanson is just so much more FUN!
"Why are you choosing to write one NOW, at 30 years old?"
Well, besides the fact that, amazingly enough, there's still demand for it, it kinda started as an accident. Sort of.
Ten Years And Muses is a sequel to a Hanfic called Yesterday that I (Abby) and my then-best friend (Charlotte) co-wrote when we were 16 and in high school and never got published online. A couple of months ago I was laying in bed amidst all this new Hanson hype, with Anthem and the app and the new tour and I got to thinking. "I should totally bring back Mel and Drew," the main characters of the story. I ran the idea across Charlotte and she was all for it! So I got to work almost immediately on the sequel, picking up ten years later where Yesterday should have left off.
"Why didn't you publish Yesterday online?"
Honestly? Because it's kind of horrible. It was written by two 16-year-olds who knew virtually nothing of real life. The subject matter and ideas were great, they were just never very eloquently written, nor very well thought out.
The other reason it was never published is because it was never actually finished. We had so many great ideas and plans that never really got off the floor because life started getting in the way. The project sort of just faded away with time.
"What is Yesterday about?"
Yesterday follows Melody Banks and Andrew Brooks, a pair of best friends who stumble into the world of Hanson. They're from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it is discovered early on that Melody, nicknamed Mel, and Taylor were best friends as toddlers until his family moved away and they lost touch for over twelve years or so. The two girls end up answering a babysitting ad from Diana and everything comes to light.
From there, Drew and Zac start a wild and crazy sexual relationship that eventually turns romantic and Mel and Taylor begin their stormy, tumultuous relationship that mimics that of Cathy and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Mel has a flair for the dramatics,
while Taylor is passionate and quick-tempered. They are constantly at odds, yet neither one can live without the other.
Meanwhile, Drew and Zac are constantly caught in the middle when all they want to do is have fun!
In Ten Years And Muses, you will read how Yesterday was ultimately supposed to end, but you will also spot some discrepancies in background. This is, in part, because I didn't review Yesterday until 14 chapters into Ten Years And Muses and I decided I liked my new backgrounds better than the originals.
For instance, originally Mel was not an only child. She had a large family of her own with a step-mother. In Ten Years And Muses, both of Mel's biological parents are still married and are close friends with Diana and Walker Hanson.
Another is that Taylor actually did cheat on Mel at least once, at a party, as opposed to him telling her in Ten Years And Muses that he never did. In Yesterday, she actually walked in on him in the act.
In Ten Years And Muses, it is revealed that Mel moved away as a child then returned several years later and rekindled her friendship with Taylor which ended up blossoming into a romance. In Yesterday, it was actually Taylor and his family that move away and they lost touch for so long that Mel doesn't remember his name and they end up reuniting when his mother puts out a babysitting ad for the younger siblings and Mel and Drew end up responding to it.
In Yesterday, Drew and Mel were best friends much earlier in life than described in Ten Years And Muses. In fact, not only did they live across the street from each other, but both were die-hard Hanson fans.
Those were most of the major differences. Most everything else is minor. We chose to keep personalities as similar as possible, just matured them about ten years.
There are no plans in the works to publish Yesterday online at all. However, the Foreword contains excerpts from it to give you an idea of what Ten Years and Muses is based on.
Ten Years And Muses may not be the greatest piece of literature you'll ever read. It isn't perfect. It can get a little flashy and outlandish, and sometimes downright corny. But if you want good, soap opera fiction, this one will probably be for you.
Please remember, as you begin reading, that Ten Years and Muses and excerpts from Yesterday are purely fiction and should be treated as such. Timelines are not specified and children's names were not used. As a matter of fact, the children never actually
appear in the story. We decided to eliminate one entire set of children, as we felt that keeping their existence in the story would hit a
little too close to home and we know there are fans out there that wouldn't be able to handle the content, fiction or not.
Again, this story is complete FICTION and in no way reflects the feelings or beliefs or the authors. We have decided to give this story an R rating due to language, content, and some subject matter.
Happy Reading!!

*Note, updated 7/4/13* I just read Tulsa 74132 for the first time last night after just hearing of its existence for the first time. It should be noted that all similar instances from Yesterday and its excerpts are purely coincidental and that neither story is related nor influenced by the other.
